Britain is a constitutional monarchy. monarch Elizabeth II is head of state. UK consists of four nationwide parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. UK parliament consists of two chambers, the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
It is in the House of commons that all important decisions taken, while the House of Lord is largely powerless. The government is only responsible to the House of Commons. The House of Commons consists of 659 members. Their main task is to make laws, decide on the expenditure and revenue for public services and to appoint and control the government. The government has the right to dissolve the lower house after five years, and organize new elections. These five years called for the House of Commons office.
They also have a prime minister. The prime minister is often selected by the Queen's government and has much power in the kingdom. Prime Minister's responsibility for his actions to the Parliament, where he/she is a member. The three dominant parties in the British Parliament is: the Labour Party, Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats.
They do not have as many parties in Britain like we have here in Sweden.
This is how you vote:
The country is divided into constituencies, with maybe 55-65000 people in each.
A candidate has a majority vote in single member constituencies. This means that in every constituency, there is only one term, namely a seat in the House of Commons. The person who receives the most votes in the constituency may get the mandate. Every time there is a vacancy in the House of commons ,such as if a member dies, then you have by-elections to find a new member. To get the right to vote every British citizen must be aged 18 or over and resident in the constituency. The person who wants to become a candidate must have the signature of at least ten voters in the constituency. He / she must also give some money, which can likely happend that you get rid of if you do not get at least 5 % of the votes in the constituency. There are some differences between how the parties choose their candidates.Within the Conservative Party are free for anyone to register as a candidate.Labour candidates must be proposed by an organization associated with the party, such as a union. The choice of candidate must be approved by the party at the central level. The candidate must not use the amount of money whatsoever for his electoral campaign, but must limit the amount. The party with the largest number of members of the House of commons may form a government. The United Kingdom is controlled by its government, but in fact it is happening in the Queen's name, even if the queen has no real power.
